The warning list, in numbers

We think a list like this should be open about how it's run. These figures are live.

How the list is run

  • A person decides every entry. Automated checks and research find and sort candidates. They never add a site on their own.
  • Evidence for every entry. Each decision is recorded with what was checked and why, in an append-only log: entries are added, never changed or deleted.
  • Websites, not people. The list identifies websites. It never names individuals.
  • Neutral wording. A flag is our assessment that a site matches a pattern. It is not a finding that anyone broke the law.
  • Regular re-checks. Every listed site is looked at again at least every 90 days, and comes off if the problem has been fixed.
  • A right of reply. Any business can ask for a review. We aim to answer within 14 days.
  • Protected from tampering. The list is digitally signed, and the app ignores any copy that doesn't carry our signature.
